Supporting the local businesses
Since BestStart Flatbush School Road is new in the Flatbush community, our Preschool children were engaged in an Inquiry learning about their community, what it offers and how we support these small businesses.
Our tamariki were excited to talk about places they have visited with their whanau, such as the coffee club, Medical Centre, Pak'nPak'n Save, Countdown, New World, cinemas, Barry Curtis Park, Murphy'sMurphy's Bush, bakery, The Warehouse, McDonald's, gas station, pizza place, restaurants and many other places.
Children used their creative minds and took help from their teachers and parents to create their favourite places using cardboard boxes. Each child had spent about two weeks completing their project, and during this time, there were lots of thinking skills, designing, conversation, problem solving and accomplishments.
Once the projects were completed, each child was given time to lead mat time and talk about their project. This was such a great sharing time, and we could see our competent and confident communicators taking the lead in their own learning.
The preschool team displayed the project in the foyer for the whole Centre to visit. This learning was also celebrated with a shared lunch in the Preschool room.
