Food Waste is a massive problem in New Zealand. Every year Kiwis send 157,398 tons of food to landfill, all of which could have been eaten. Not only is wasting food costing us money, but it is also bad for the environment.  At Beststart Kenderdine, we are working on the project - 'Love Food Hate Waste'.

There are two objectives of this project: Firstly, to instill in children a love and appreciation for food. By teaching them about the origins and diversity of different foods, how they are grown, and how to prepare them, children can develop a deeper understanding and respect for the food they eat. Secondly, to raise awareness about the problem of food waste. By teaching children about the importance of reducing food waste through responsible consumption, reuse, and recycling, they can become more conscious of their own actions and develop sustainable habits to benefit the planet and future generations.

Therefore, to take active participation in reducing food waste, and reuse of food while focusing on sustainability goals with the partnership of our Tamariki, teachers, whanau, and community, we participated in the Papatoetoe Food Festival.

Our Purpose for this project:
1) To develop respect and an understanding of each other’s diversity and for papatūānuku (Mother Earth) for which we are kaitiaki (guardians).
2)To create an unstructured, open-ended, vibrant, dynamic, and sustainable learning environment where our tamariki are supported in their growth and development.
3) To empower our tamariki to ‘Be co-authors of their learning’ allowing them agency in their learning, enhancing their mana and those of others.
