Taking Care of our Garden
In Montessori Rongotai we believe safe, responsive and nurturing environments are an important part of supporting the learning and development of pre-schoolers. Introducing children to the great outdoors can also lead to higher academic performance, reduced stressed levels, improved social skills and more. Montessori education emphasize the interconnectedness of all living things. Children are taught that they are part of a larger ecosystem and that their actions have an impact on the world around them. Taking care of the environment is crucial to maintaing a balance and harmony in nature, it also promotes the development of responsibility and independence. Taking care of the environment teaches children to be responsible for their actions and the consequences they have on the world. By learning to take care of their surroundings, children learn to be accountable for their actions and make choices that positively impact their environment. In the morning, they water the plants at our back garden, checking the soil and bush. It shows responsibility from caring for plants, understanding the plant life cycle (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants), meanwhile it builds self-confident from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they grow.
