Talofa Lava! Welcome aboard Air Doncaster.  We hope you enjoy your flight to Samoa.  Your Captain for the flight is Theo and your flight attendants are Lucas and Jatinder who will be looking after your inflight refreshments.  Our flight time to Samoa is tolu (3) hours and once we arrive you will be taken to your “flash resort’ right on the beach.

Celebrating Gagana Samoa - Samoan Language week saw the tamariki fly to Samoa.  A plane was built for the trip and passports were made by the tamariki who wanted to go.  Making their own passports involved drawing a picture of themselves and writing their name and this was a great way to develop children’s literacy skills.

We also learnt some Samoan words and were lucky enough to be taught by one of our tamariki who is part Samoan.  Laniah took and led one of our group times, teaching us to count to sefulu (10) in Samoan.  Laniah was so excited to be the teacher for this group time – happy to share some of her culture with us.

We also experienced some Samoan food for morning tea with the children trying niu (coconut), mango and pineapple.  The coconut was not such a great hit but the mango and pineapple was loved by all.

Integrating and valuing different cultures into our centre is an important part of our curriculum here at Doncaster Drive Kindy.  It is important because we are a multi-cultural centre and believe that all children have the right to have their cultures valued, portrayed, and made visible – a belief which is integrated into our centre vision and philosophy.  ‘He waka eke noa; we are in this together’.
