Māui led his whānau by having the courage to think outside of the box to solve problems that hindered their progress. In Te Whāriki, the learning outcome “te rangatiratanga” involves children's contribution to “become increasingly capable of recognising and appreciating their own ability to learn.”

Te Rangatiratanga, which refers to self-determination and autonomy, is nurtured and promoted amongst all our preschool learners here at BestStart Elles Road. Some of the learning outcomes our tamariki achieve through a range of learning opportunities are:

Children develop strategies for solving problems and making decisions. Educators can provide open-ended activities and materials that require children to think critically, problem-solve, and make decisions independently or collaboratively. They can facilitate conversations around sharing, turn-taking, and empathy.

Empowering Choices: Children develop a sense of agency and take responsibility for their actions. Educators can create opportunities for children to engage in real-life tasks and responsibilities, such as caring for classroom pets, tidying up, or planning a class event. This fosters a sense of ownership and pride in their contributions.

Communication and Collaboration: Children become effective communicators and develop positive relationships. Kaiako can encourage children to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through various mediums. They can also facilitate group activities that require cooperation and collaboration, fostering positive relationships among peers.
