Te Reo Week Challenge

Te Wiki O Te Maori

Are you Ready for the Challenge?

There are many things that identifies New Zealand, Te Reo(Maori language) is one of them.

The week of 14th-18th of September is Te Reo Maori week. This week is intended to encourage New Zealanders to promote the use of the Maori language.

At Montessori Otumoetai we want to challenge our parents to speak to us in Te Reo Maori. Whenever a parent speaks in Te Reo, their name will go into the lucky draw box. At the end of the week whoever wins the draw, will receive:

  • One day childcare free for that week.
  • And a gift.

Here are some phrases you can use in our daily meetings:

  • Kia Pai to ra (Have a good day)
  • Ka Kite Apopo (See you tomorrow)
  • Noho ora mai (Be well/Stay safe)
  • Hei Kona ra (Good bye)
  • Kia ora rawa atu (Thank you very much)
  • Kei te pehea koe (How are you)
  • Kei te pai (I am good)

It was great to see and hear so many of our parents giving it a go even if they were not confident with the pronunciation. It was a fun way to include our wider community in the Te Reo Maori Week and a great way to keep our native language alive.
