Te tau hou Māori
Here at BestStart Porchester to celebrate te tau hou Māori, we gathered together with whanau and tamariki creating different beautiful taonga that symbolize matariki and all her many meanings.
We created star’s to represent the constellation. Each star has their own meaning and represents different parts of our life.
We made kites as kites were a form of communication, and in the past generation, it was a way to measure the success of the enemy at battle. In myths, the god Tāwhaki flew to the heaven on kites to fetch the baskets of knowledge.
We taught the children weaving as it is a big part of the Māori cultural, it is knowledge that has been passed down from our ancestors and represents the survival of our Māori culture.
We also did some planting and had a tradition Māori (Hangi) kai for lunch with the tamariki and whanau.
