At BestStart Katikati we have been focusing our learning around Te Tiriti of Waitangi. At our mat times, we discussed the new class treaty which was a nice way of making learning visible.

We talked about the three P's of the Te Tiriti of Waitangi - Partnership, Participation and Protection and made connections to these by coming up with what the tamariki thought were ok things and not ok things to do at our centre.

It was great to see us sharing information / mohiotanga and working together in partnership to form a new treaty.

We revisited last year's treaty and talked about some of the things that we thought we no longer needed on our new treaty. We have made our new treaty around the promotion of ok things to do, with positive play and taking care of each other and the environment a priory.

The tamariki got to share in signing this treaty with a feather from a pheasant and dipping it in ink. They put their thumb print on the treaty and enjoyed watching their kaiako signing and putting their thumb prints on there as well, confirming the partnership.

We looked at the Maori flag and the New Zealand flag and talked about the differences between them. We made some whare's / houses as well which was great to have conversations about, as the tamariki were able to share about their cultures.

This was a lovely way to learn about our history and teach the tamariki the importance of this historical day and empower them more information to share with their whanau. The tamariki  gained more knowledge around whanaungatanga (a sense of belonging) and kotahitanga (oneness) through working together collaboratively.
