What have we been up to lately? BestStart Harrison Street Te Awa Room were invited down to Palmerston North for a Mini Olympics Sports Day to compete against other BestStart Centres within the Manawatu-Wanganui region. As a part of our vision “Growing a Community”, excursions are one of the ways we use to link and explore what is out there for our children to learn and connect with.

Ready with nine tamariki we had officially named ourselves Team Rubber Duckies and at 7.30am in the morning the children were rearing to go. After an hour’s bus trip, the children were excited to see what was going to happen next. We discovered that a huge school field had been set up with a series of different sports activities for the children to take part in, and then the child with the best result would get a reward at the end of the day.

This experience has provided the children opportunities to build their self esteem as they engage in new challenges and recognise their own growth and accomplishments. We were very proud to have one of our tamariki win the outright toss in the gumboot throw.

It was a great day had by all, and it is through this experience the children were able to gain confidence in their bodies and develop a sense of achievement after completing each sports activity, and everyone had lots of fun while doing it.
