The Mata-Au room was buzzing with excitement today as our kaiako Kathryn introduced the tamariki to building large-scale creations using construction straws.

From the outset, this experience invited collaboration, creativity, and shared problem-solving. Together, the tamariki carefully planned their ideas and worked as a team to bring them to life, resulting in an impressive helicopter and a large house.

Under Kathryn’s guidance, the tamariki experienced the joy and satisfaction of seeing their plans transform into real structures. Their sense of pride was evident as they recognised the value of their individual contributions to the group effort. The deep concentration on their faces highlighted their engagement and perseverance as they worked through challenges together.

Throughout the activity, rich conversations took place as the tamariki discussed their next steps, negotiated roles, and shared ideas. They explored early mathematical concepts by talking about colours, counting connectors, and deciding how many straws were needed, supporting the Exploration|Mana Aotūroa strand of Te Whāriki.

This experience strongly supported our centre priority of social competence|te aheinga papori, as tamariki practised teamwork, turn-taking, respectful communication, and cooperation. These skills align with Contribution|Mana Tangata, as children learned to work alongside others in ways that are fair and inclusive.

Our centre philosophy of working together|mahi tahi was clearly evident throughout this activity. We are all excited to see what creative ideas the tamariki choose to explore and construct next.
