TeHeuHeu Street Kindy Kaitiakitanga
Kindy Kaitiaki A kaitiaki is a guardian, and the process and practices of protecting and looking after the environment are referred to as kaitiakitanga.
At Te Heuheu Street Kindy we have been on our sustainability journey for quite awhile now and our tamariki have been an important part of this process. We have seen our sustainable practices strengthening year to year as this is an area that we are passionate in and our tamariki are always highly engaged in taking care of Papatūānuku. We have recycling bins where we seperate our plastics from our lunchboxes and a compost bin that we use the food scraps to add to our worm farm. Our gardens are always one of our tamariki favourite things to take care of as they love to help in the garden and harvest the rewards of their labour.
They learn about healthy eating and where our fresh produce that they see in the supermarkets come from. We have created a seed book of lots of different plants that we use in our garden so our tamariki can see what the seeds look like before we plant them into our garden/māra. Whānau can access this resource as well. It also has lots of important information about that plant relating to the nutrients that it provides for their child.
Our tamariki love the hands on learning that they get from being out in the environment and sharing what they have learnt in the garden with their whānau and friends. We are looking to expand our māra soon so we can plant and harvest a lot more produce for our tamariki to eat, especially for morning teas.
If this sounds like something that you also have a passion about or just want your child to be more interested in our sustainability journey, pop in to see us and have a look around at our great environment. Hope to see you soon!!
