Testing our Working Theories
Now that the weather is starting to warm up, we are setting up more waterplay experiences outside for our tamariki. We gathered up different containers for the water including large metal bowls, smaller containers, droppers and spoons for scooping, pouring and transferring the water.
Through this experience tamariki were able to test their working theories and make discoveries about the natural world, and learn concepts such as volume and colour theory. Our tamariki loved experimenting with the primary colours and seeing what different colour combinations they could make as they mixed colours together. Tamariki also liked gathering natural resources from around the garden and used their imaginations to create magic potions, soup, coffee and tea.
Through this learning experience, tamariki were also able to develop their fine motor skills by squeezing and releasing the droppers, and moving around the smaller pieces in the bowl. This practical movement helps tamariki build on their pincer grip - skills needed to hold a pencil! Our tamariki also were able to practice their budding problem-solving skills, build on their developing social competencies and negotiate with their peers.
These experiences are a great opportunity for tamariki to learn to share resources and space, and engage in communication with their peers as they navigate the trials of working alongside others.
