Diwali is a very important cultural event for many of our families here at BestStart Pyes Pa, so we like to put a lot of thought into how we celebrate it at the Centre.  With Covid 19’s Delta variant rearing its ugly head around the country, we decided that we would still hold a celebration.  The tamariki enjoyed making beautiful diya lamps, dressing up in gorgeous Indian attire, and learning some dances which were led by Raj, one of our talented teachers.

For the celebration itself, we invited families to bring some food to share.  One of our families came in and helped us to create an alter in the room for Ganesh worship, bringing their own Ganesh from home and using flowers gathered from the gardens of our families to decorate it.  We had dancers from the Indian community come in to give a demonstration of this beautiful cultural art form, and a slideshow which helped everyone who is not from the Indian culture to understand just how important Diwali is for our Indian friends.   It is this collaboration within our centre which makes BestStart Pyes Pa such a magical place to be.
