Today the children in the Pukeko Room (2 - 3 year olds) discovered a lone cricket in the playground. Once the children had observed it for a while they decided they needed to protect it and look after it. First step they took was to find food for the bug in the form of leaves, so that it didn't go hungry. Next came discussions among the children ensuring no one hurt the bug so they created a wall for the bug to protect it, this was thoughtfully made out of duplo. Next step, was one of the children decided the bug needed its own sandpit, this was quickly added. Then came the toys for the bug which included a ball and a some small blocks.

This organic play experience provided the children time to have great discussions around caring for their bug and being a kaitiaki towards the land. It also provided turn taking abilities and shared thinking and the opportunity to extend their own learning. It was such special moment to witness.
