The Golden Wheelie bin
Here at BestStart Rangiora we have had a big focus on being kaitiaki. We have learned a lot in the past year on how to care for our land, seas and skies and also all living beings that inhabit our earth. This has looked like big discussions, provocations, veg gardens and even a worm farm. Not only are the tamariki passionate, so are our kaiako and team, especially Bridgett our recycling champion.
Not only is Bridgett a whizz in the kitchen she is dedicated to making sure our recycling is done right, as do all of us in our classrooms. Tamariki can often be heard discussing what waste goes where, what incredible eco warriors we are teaching. We have been having visits from Julie and Justin from the council who run the recycling programme and all this learning and putting into practice had our centre awarded with the golden wheelie bin after a recycling audit! Why is this so special? It is the first time to ever have been awarded in our district in the whole 15 years this recycling initiative has been in place, ka mahi e te whānau.
This occasion was one to be celebrated, the mayor came and was so impressed with the the beautiful waiata we sung and the extensive knowledge of our tamariki. Julie and Justin came too and we were presented not only the golden wheelie bin but a certificate, pukapuka and an incredible compost bin! The Mayor even asked if he could come see our compost when it is made, how cool!
Here at BestStart Rangiora, sustainability, environmental awareness and kindness to all has become engrained in our culture, the tamariki are whakahī/proud to know and teach what it is to be kaitiaki.
