Lemons are a little like toddlers, bright, robust little individuals, but when you scratch the surface they are zesty, interesting, curious, and full of wonder. Powerful in their way. See the vibrant colors of leaf and fruit, feel the hefty weight, inhale the zesty smell, plus the surprising taste of sweet and sour on the palate by providing various opportunities for our toddlers to interact and explore the humble lemon, they are using and further developing their senses.

We are in turn provoking thinking, curiosity, and creativity which has opened a new page to exploring, and engaging the senses. Painting using the vibrant yellows and greens of the tree, grating zest into the water trough and play dough, toddlers carrying lemons and spontaneously incorporating these into their play ideas.

Exploring deeper by peeling the lush fruit, and chatting about the zest, pith, seeds, and flesh, the tasting experience was interesting, with some toddlers screwing up their faces, and others enjoying the sweet sour mix. Sensory play is very important for our children, of any age, as each new experience they have, using a different sense builds nerve connections that grow the architecture of their brain. Using the senses is how our children figure out and build knowledge about their world.
