The Lion Sleeps Tonight
After weeks of practicing and listening to the Lion sleeps tonight our Pukeko (3-5yr old) tamariki put on a performance for their whanau and friends today. They have been practicing for weeks now singing and deciding who would be what animal then researching to figure out movements and sound their animal makes.
Their costumes which consisted of coloured clothing and face paint looked amazing and helped them with the confidence they showed getting up there and performing. This confidence shows a deep sense of mana in themselves. This also links into our curriculum learning through Wellbeing and Contribution.
The care and pride taken in remembering their animal, its movements and wearing the costumes show their developing social competence. We had a massive whanau turn out with parents, grandparents, Aunties and Uncles as well as siblings and cousins come to watch. The inclusion of whanau helps to strengthen community ties and strengthens our emphasis on creating authentic respectful relationships.
After their Lion sleeps tonight performance the tamariki then shared some waiata that we have been learning all year following on from our Polyfest performance, reinforcing this learning. We love engaging with whanau in this way and are already planning the next one.
