The Vegetable Hunters
With all the talk about our forthcoming BestStart Havelock North Matariki celebrations and the delicious soup we will be making, we thought that we would take a walk to the local supermarket with a small group of children to buy some more vegetables. We set off over to the village and made our way to New World. Lawson decided that he would hold the basket, and after a quick taste of the mandarins on offer it was into the vegetable department to choose appropriate soup ingredients. Luke chose some pieces of pumpkin, while Ayden decided that a parsnip would be a great addition. Theo picked a rather big red potato and put it in the basket. We then had a look around the supermarket to see what else was on offer. The children were particularly interested in all the lovely cakes and pastries in the bakery section. It was then time to head to the checkout to buy our vegetables and put them in the shopping bags to bring back to the centre. The boys were very excited to show Vicki the results of their super shopping expedition. It's going to be a very tasty soup for sure.
Getting out and about in the local community provides opportunities for children to experience a different learning environment, share their stories and interests, and learn about their world.
