To commemorate the Treaty of Waitangi and upholding its principles of partnership, participation, and protection, at BestStart Montessori Otumoetai, together with our whanau we provided many learning opportunities to our tamariki related to the Maori Culture.

Flax Weaving: After preparing the harakeke (flax) by cutting, sorting and splitting children weaved putiputi (flowers), Ika(fish) and Whariki (mat) with help and guidance from our elders- giving opportunity to practice their hand -eye co-ordination skills.

Rewena Pararoa (a traditional Māori sourdough), was prepared by our tamariki using their practical life skills with the help of our Maori whanau whilst following all the tikanga around food.

Maori art was explored through face painting and coloring in pages.

Korowai, a traditional Maori cloak was sown by our children which was proudly worn by our tamariki at the end of the day.

At Montessori Otumoetai, respect is always shown for the Maori views and learning opportunities are created for our children to learn about the Maori values and practices.
