Tuesday's Sports Day
What glorious weather we have had the past few weeks, which means lots of outdoor fun and learning. Yesterday, we held a sports day for Matakauri and Matau to come together to develop physical skills and teamwork, muscle strength, coordination, flexibility, balance, and have lots of fun! We set up different stations in the garden to encourage the Tamariki to explore.
The swing is always very popular, and we changed out the swings to a rope ladder, to practice climbing up and develop our core strength. We added chairs to the station for Tamariki who were waiting to have a turn, to encourage turn taking and sharing. What fun!
We made 3 seesaws which were the highlight of the day! We took turns in using them, and spoke about math concepts such as heavy and light. The seesaws encouraged lots of thinking and reasoning as to "why is it stuck" and "why isn't it going down?". This encouraged teamwork and negotiation to make the seesaw work!
We changed up our climbing equipment to make different height levels and angles, using wooden beams. We used these to crawl, shuffe, walk both alone and assisted, and to jump!
Lastly, we played frisbee! this was a game that Tiaki suggested we play when he found a frisbee in the garden. We hunted down some more, and got to work. After a few practices and demonstrations we took turns to see who could throw the frisbee the fastest and furthest. We had to retrieve a fair few from over the fence, which shows me just how strong the Tamariki are!
After a busy fun filled morning, we sat down to enjoy a picnic together, and cooled off puddle jumping!
