At BestStart Motutaiko Street, keeping healthy and active is a value that has naturally become part of who we are.

Biking is embedded within our curriculum and daily experiences, providing opportunities for tamariki to challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop essential physical skills.

Our bikes are well-loved, and riding has become a meaningful part of our centre culture. A special part of our biking journey is our ongoing partnership with Cath from Bike Taupō, who visits our centre each month. Her visits have become a valued ritual that our tamariki eagerly anticipate.

Through her guidance, encouragement, and expertise, children are supported to extend their biking abilities while developing a deeper understanding of bike safety, balance, control, and coordination. What makes these visits particularly special is how seamlessly they connect our tamariki with the wider Taupō community.

Cath brings with her not only knowledge and skills but also a sense of belonging to a community that values movement, outdoor exploration, and healthy lifestyles. This partnership allows our children to experience firsthand that learning does not just happen within the walls of our centre. It is strengthened through relationships and connections with the people and places around us. As children ride, we see so much more than physical development taking place.

We witness determination as they attempt a new challenge, resilience as they get back up after a wobble, and pride as they achieve goals they once thought were impossible. We see children encouraging their friends, celebrating each other's successes, and learning the importance of perseverance.

These experiences align closely with the aspirations of Te Whāriki, empowering children to become confident and capable learners who are willing to take risks, solve problems, and develop a strong sense of wellbeing. Through biking, tamariki are strengthening their gross motor skills, building self-confidence, and developing dispositions that will support them throughout their lives. Our monthly visits with Cath remind us that learning is at its richest when it is connected to our local community and the unique opportunities that surround us.

In many ways, the relationship between Bike Taupō and our centre reflects the interconnected nature of learning itself. The values of our community become the values of our centre, and the experiences of our tamariki become part of the wider story of Taupō. We are incredibly grateful to Cath and Bike Taupō for being such an important part of our community.

Together, we are helping tamariki develop the skills, confidence, and sense of adventure that will keep them pedaling forward for years to come.
