Recently, our Centre came together to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in a beautiful and meaningful gathering that truly highlighted the spirit of our community.

This event was so much more than just a celebration—it was a precious opportunity for our tamariki, whānau, and kaiako to connect with te ao Māori, our traditions, and each other.

Preparation and Dedication
The hard mahi of our tamariki and kaiako was evident in every part of the evening. From weeks of preparing songs, dances, presentations, and artwork inspired by the stars of Matariki, to creating beautiful decorations and kai for the shared meal, the dedication was incredible. Our tamariki shone with pride as we shared their presentation on the big screen—they definitely outshone the Matariki stars that night.

The activities around the room showed respect and understanding of the significance of Matariki—marking new beginnings, remembering those who have passed, and celebrating the future.

Weaving Tikanga Māori into Learning
Our kaiako’s commitment to weaving tikanga Māori into the learning experience gave tamariki a strong sense of identity and belonging. The thoughtful way in which they supported the children helped make this event memorable and special for everyone involved.

Community United
This gathering reminded us all of the power of coming together as a community. It was a time for learning, reflection, joy, and whakawhanaungatanga—strengthening our bonds and inspiring us all to carry the values of Matariki throughout the year.

In my culture, we often say, "It's not how big the house is, it's how happy the HOME is." Seeing all the happy faces out on the cold, rainy evening in our small venue filled with conversation, activities, laughter, giggles, and glee made it feel like a family event and HOME for me. 💛😍🫶

Gratitude and Looking Forward
We are so proud of our tamariki, whānau, and kaiako for their dedication and the mana they brought to this event. It was truly a night to remember, and one that will stay in our hearts as we continue to grow and learn together.

Thank you so much, whānau, for bringing kai to share and for all the feedback as well. There is always room for improvement, and we hope next year's Matariki brings us even more beautiful memories.

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!
