At BestStart Ngatai Road, we encourage our tamariki to use baby sign to help them to be able to communicate with their kaiako and friends. The tamariki in the Tui room are using the baby signs in many different situations such as kai time, playtime and anytime when they want to communicate their needs. When you see a baby who is making a circle on their chest at the kai table, they are saying ‘please’ to ask for some food. If they put all fingertips together, they want ‘more’ food. The baby signs help our Tamariki to develop non-verbal and verbal communication skills as thy say the word with the sign but also helps develop their social skills. Most of tamariki in the Tui room are starting to say ‘please’ in the baby signs and try more words such as ‘thank you, more, cuddle, finished, etc.’ in their daily routines. Kaiako in the Titoki room are also learning baby sign so that they can continue this communication as the children transition but also to help our children who have English as a second language.
