In Oamaru, the Victorian Heritage Celebrations occur every year in November. Locals and visitors enjoy a range of events throughout the week including historical talks, dances, garden parties, the fete and penny farthing races.

Oamaru is full of grand Victorian architecture, traditional rural buildings and beautiful gardens making it the perfect location to explore the Victorian era and celebrate our ancestors.

Unfortunately, this year due to covid restrictions, the annual celebrations are not being held. But here at Kindy we were excited to been learning about our Victorian heritage in a variety of ways.

We enjoyed learning about transport in Victorian times, looking closely at Penny Farthings and painting them using tea paint to give them an aged look.

We had a look at the clothing that was worn in the Victorian era, we printed off a variety of outfits worn by both men and women and had fun colouring them in.

We also looked into our beautiful Victorian buildings that we have in our very own town, we printed some of our local buildings off and used chalk to decorate them.

So much hard work went into learning and celebrating our Victorian heritage here in Oamaru, we saw awesome creativity, imagination and some amazing working theories in regards to how our town and the world has changed over time! We realised just how lucky we are to have this amazing history in our community!
