The Kawakawa room were learning about the letter “b” over the last couple of weeks and they finished the weeks off with a buzzing bang with having “The Bee Lady” come and visit us and teach us even more about the life of bees.

We were so excited to see a real life hive, we had to work really hard to find where the Queen Bee was and if we placed our ear carefully along the side of the hive we could hear them all buzzing around inside. We got to make our very own candle made from bee’s wax along with being able to taste some yummy honey made from these special bee’s.

There were lots of things that we learnt of the amazing bee lady who was so full of knowledge and facts!

Here is some of what we took away from her visit:

#Bee’s have 5 eyes – wow

#Worker bees vomit out the honey into the cells from what they have made and collected

#The worker bees pollenate from flower to flower which helps our plants and flowers to grow without bee’s our plants and flowers wouldn’t grow

# Bees won’t hurt you unless you make them angry or scared – so if they fly around you its best to stand still and walk away quickly rather than run or flap your hands

#They use their wings to change the temp within the hive

#If they get a new queen and the worker bee’s don’t accept the queen all of the bees will sadly die

#The bee’s wiggle their bottoms to communicate with their peers around where the pollen is, and they also can communicate the distance with how many wiggles. They are very precise with their directions as well.

#The worker bee’s will move and create a circle around the queen bee whenever she is around and they become her workers until she moves on

#When the queen bee lays her eggs she finds an empty cell and then she pops her bottom all the way in and wiggles the eggs out.

We had such a fun day extending our knowledge and investigating further about the wonderful life of Bee’s!

We look forward to doing all we can to not be scared of Bee’s and protecting them so we can continue to enjoy honey, flowers and plants!
