As part of exploring our local curriculum here at BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, our tamariki visited Mayfield Primary School Library. The children were excited to explore a little more of the community, sharing their experiences. "I go this shop" they noticed as we passed by the bakery and dairy. "My brother...goes to the big school there." Once we had arrived, the children were curious to explore the books. It was wonderful to see as they were able to discover their favourite characters and stories in the library, showing confidence in recognizing the symbols and images within these books as they attempted to read and retell their versions.

Exploring our community has been positive in growing the children's awareness and understanding of the world around them. They were able to make links between their own experiences from home, sharing these ideas with their friends and teachers. Through their conversations with one another, they were able to discuss and consolidate their ideas about the world around them.

"Trips to places outside the ECE centre or visits from people can provide children with new experiences and increase their understanding of the world around them."- Te Whariki
