Being committed to the Treaty of Waitangi, we have been sharing with our children the stories of how the European settlers came to New Zealand. This led us to plan a visit to the historic site, Te Papa, which offers a glimpse into New Zealand's early history and culture.

Our visit to the Te Papa/ The Elms garden provided our tamariki with an enriching experience. The visit offered them an opportunity to see the invaluable antique tools and equipment, vegetation and other items brought by the missionaries to New Zealand. Our tour guide shared many stories of the interactions between the missionaries and the indigenous Maori people in setting up this garden.

The rich collection of the garden sparked curiosity and excitment among our children. They got to see old english trees, palm trees, NZ native trees and palms and food plants and other trees. When they were back to the centre many children drew images of what they saw and enjoyed. The huge bell and the Mission house were the main attractions of our children. The trip was not just a fun day out but was a journey of discovery and respect for the rich heritage around them.
