Today the children made their own small volcano out of plaster of Paris and water.  The children took turns to pour, measure and mix together the ingredients before pouring into the mould. The children waited really patiently for the mould to dry. Next it was time to paint the volcano. After the paint had dried, we all went outside to make an explosion! The children made predictions on what they thought was going to happen. Tamariki all had a chance at smelling the vinegar and baking soda.

The science: We talked about how the baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When the two ingredients are combined together this forms a chemical reaction and releases a gas called carbon dioxide and this causes the bubbles.
