Waitangi Day celebrations at BestStart Havelock North
Our Waitangi Day celebrations at BestStart Havelock North began with a lesson in where the first settlers arrived in New Zealand to sign a Treaty. We talked about what is a Treaty which is an agreement between two parties at how we can work together. We sang our song “Kia Ora how are you…?” To introduce our friends to each other, we practised giving handshakes to welcome each other. From here we looked at our centre Treaty and talked to our children about what it means to be a kind friend? We explored with weaving paper. We sang “Tutira Mai Nga Iwi”. We asked our children how they were going to be celebrating Waitangi Day with their Whanau. After the weekend we revisited this conversation. To hear what the children had celebrated with their whanau.
