As the weather warms up, here at BestStart Raureka, the children's interest and exploration in water play increases. Whether it be water in the trough or puddles from the warm Spring rain, our tamariki find great joy in exploring water.

Some tamariki like to quietly explore water, by tipping the water from one container to another, seeing how it flows and changes the weight of each container as the volume increases or decreases. Other children use water play as an opportunity to build social skills.

Asking others if they want to be splashed, laughing and chatting together, and taking turns with the water play resources. Through water play, children are exploring maths concepts such as volume and weight, problem-solving, social competencies through turn-taking and sharing, language and communication, and seeing the fun they have in learning with and alongside others.

The children are also engaged in our centre priorities and philosophy kaupapa as they build relationships and confidence in sharing their voice (whanaungatanga) and discussing the sustainability of water and what this might mean for our centre (manaakitanga) - making connections between people, places and things in their world and understanding oral language and using it for a range of purposes.
