We built a waka

To celebrate Waitangi Day, the Koru Room at BestStart Kelvin Grove built a waka.

The children painted the waka then swam in the awa (river) to wash themselves clean. The children hopped in the waka with the paddles, made from flax fronds and a toitoi flower at the front of the waka. Whilst in the waka we sang the song 'Sit down, sit down your rocking the boat' in English and Te Reo.

Through this learning experience we were able to discuss the importance of Waitangi Day and embrace our Maori culture. This led to the children exploring their pepeha's in the days following Waitangi Day.
