We celebrated Tongan language week at BestStart East Tamaki
At BestStart East Tamaki, we celebrated Tongan language week from 5th to 9th September.
The whole week our children/tamariki were engaged with some Tongan-themed activities with their teachers/kaiako. They learnt about Tongan culture, explored some Tongan cultural artefacts during their mat time, and created some awesome Tongan patterns with creative artwork.
Our tamariki also had the opportunity to explore the root crop “Taro”, which they peeled and later cooked by our chef Terri which children tasted at their lunchtime. Together with that, they had fun joining in the dance to Tongan music. They learnt some new Tongan moves, which they showcased during our performance at the celebration.
We ended this beautiful cultural celebration with a fascinating colourful floral dress-up.
