In January one of our teacher's bough in some fencing and a house for our exciting new friends. He set up the area with the tamariki and they were all very excited about what was to come. The next day two little black guinea pigs arrived called Greg and Pepa - named by the tamariki!  A few days passed and one of our other teachers saw that the Animal Rehab Centre advertised two guinea pigs called Salty and Garlic who are 15 weeks old and we thought, well the pen is big enough, so why not!

The tamariki are loving having the guinea pigs at the centre, getting the chance to pat and watch them as they walk around their wee home. Some have even got the chance to sit in the pen and let the guinea pigs walk up to them and sniff them.

Learning about empathy, relationships, the environment and nature are just some of the benefits tamariki receive by caring for animals. Having the guinea pigs at our centre gives tamariki an opportunity to observe, interact and learn about animals and it can be a valuable part of their education and care experience, enriching their learning about nature, the animal way of life and relationships.
