We love mess! Sensory exploration is just such a fun way to learn and explore.

Through sensory play, we are learning about our different senses, taste, touch, sight, smell and sound. Through touch we are able to learn so much about the world around us; we are able to feel just how cold and slimy paint is.

We explore its slippery texture in so many ways, through rubbing it onto our skin like it’s our favourite lotion or exploring it through external tools like a paint brush, finding all the different ways to explore and manipulate the paint in different ways to work for us. Besides the sensory exploration we are also learning different skills, like communication.

We are little sponges, absorbing everything around us – especially what our Kaiako (teachers) are saying to us through narrating what we are feeling and doing. We are learning so many new words, slowly adding them to our ever-growing list of internal vocabulary, holding them in place for when we are ready to use them.

As Kaiako talk to us we can start to use some context clues and begin putting the meaning behind the words they are using. This just goes to show how much learning we are doing with all this messy play as well as how much fun we are having!
