We love to build and create with blocks

Here at BestStart Oamaru Kindy we love to build and create with blocks. Our centre philosophy encourages our tamariki to follow their own interests and make choices about their own learning. To support this, we have a wide range of blocks which we rotate in both our indoor and outdoor environments. While our tamariki explore the blocks set out they are learning about maths and science concepts by experimenting with weight, size, balance, gravity, colours, patterns and more! To create the design that they might have in their minds our tamariki are utilising thinking skills such as problem-solving and trial and error.

Block play is also a great way for our tamariki to work with and alongside each other. While they are building and creating together, they are developing their communication skills by describing and sharing their thoughts and ideas with each other. Creating and building with blocks is a great opportunity to encourage social skills such as turn-taking, sharing and cooperating with others.
