At our centre, we place a strong emphasis on wellbeing, especially the development of social and emotional competencies. These skills are foundational for tamariki as they prepare for school and life beyond.

We use the Kia Tīmata Pai framework and our specially designed sensory room to support tamariki in learning how to understand and regulate their emotions in a safe, calm, and supportive environment. 

We introduced fun and purposeful Kia Tīmata Pai games that help tamariki build cognitive skills and practice emotional regulation.

  • Memory Match

This week’s focus was on memory, and tamariki engaged in games like Magic Blanket, encouraging focus, turn-taking, and memory. These games are designed to be inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate, helping tamariki build the skills they need to manage themselves and relate to others.

  • Sensory Room

Our sensory room is a specially created space where tamariki can explore all of their senses—sight, sound, touch, smell, and movement—in a calm and nurturing environment. 

This space is designed to help tamariki to recognise and respond to their emotions, practice calming strategies, build self-awareness & confidence and to feel safe and supported during moments of emotional intensity. Whether it’s through soft lighting, tactile materials, soothing sounds, or quiet reflection, the sensory room offers tamariki a place to reset and regulate.

  • Self-Help Skills

Tamariki practice self-help skills such as dressing themselves, packing their bags, and managing their belongings. These everyday routines build confidence and independence, helping children feel capable and ready for the expectations of school life.

  • Whānau and Kura Feedback

Our local Kura (teachers) have shared how valuable these emotional regulation strategies are for tamariki transitioning to school. They’ve highlighted the importance of children arriving with the ability to manage big emotions, follow routines, and engage positively with others. Whānau have also expressed appreciation for the sensory room as a space that honours each child’s unique emotional journey.
