In the Uenuku Room (the under 1’s space), the older tamariki who are about to transition over to the the over 1’s space are currently learning some self-help skills that will aid them as they grow and transition to the next room. It is part of the kaiako’s planning to start teaching them independence so they can start managing things on their own such as self-feeding and tidying up the table after kai.

Sophie, Malachi, and Kahu have started to learn how to hold and use the spoon to feed themselves and they have been enjoying kai time more ever since! They have been doing this for quite some time, and we are just happy to see such big changes in them since they started to eat with their hands, transitioning to the use of a spoon to eat. There have been “messy kai days”, but it is part of their journey to learning how to self-feed.

As kaiako, our role is to provide tamariki with the opportunity, encouragement, and a supportive environment where they can practice independence and help boost their confidence in doing so. Malachi too has surprised us as he helped his kaiako wipe the table after kai. What a smart boy! He took the green towel from the bench and started wiping from side to side, as if he has known it for quite some time. Good observation there, Malachi! You must have seen your kaiako do it every day and that’s why you know it so well!
