On the 31st of October, BestStart Opihi had a fun disco, dress up day and bake sale. This was to acknowledge Halloween for the tamariki and families who celebrate the event, while remaining open ended for those who do not. Children had lots of fun dressing up in their favourite costumes and dancing with their friends, to songs that they requested. Lots of families purchased a treat from our bake sale to take home or put into their child’s lunch box. The children all looked amazing and had a great time at the disco. We are incredibly lucky to have families that also donated baking to the sale, that looked and tasted amazing.

Wallingford Rest Home came down to visit us and support our bake sale. The children loved showing our Wallingford Rest Home friends around and getting to know them. Some lovely community connections were made, which we will continue through to Christmas and the new year. Tamariki later made a lovely card to deliver to Wallingford Rest Home, to share their appreciation.

BestStart Opihi are now looking forward to celebrating Christmas and the end of the year. We are looking forward to getting back to traditions this year and holding our annual end of year family evening at the Domain. This is a popular family evening where we have a picnic, barbeque, Christmas concert, face painting and a visit from the Christmas Elf. We have been getting creative in the nursery and preschool, making lots of Christmas crafts, listening to Christmas songs and practicing for our end of year party concert.

Whanaungatanga – Relationships are important to us here at BestStart Opihi.  We endeavour to celebrate our families’ traditions from home and represent them in a way that celebrates and offers plenty of learning opportunities for tamariki. Manaakitanga- respect is also important when celebrating in order to value cultural differences and understand that different families value different occasions.

We wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and New year. We look forward to sharing all of our learning experiences with you again next year.
