Lots of learning, imagination, and fun! Our tamariki have been showing a strong interest in heroes, families, and favourite roles!

We have been using these interests to support meaningful learning experiences throughout the room.

Whether children are pretending to be firefighters, caring family members, superheroes, or zoo keepers, they are developing important social skills while exploring the world around them.

One of our focuses has been learning how to treat others fairly and include everyone in play. Through small group experiences, tamariki are practising taking turns, sharing space, and working alongside their friends. These experiences help children build positive relationships and learn that everyone belongs in our Kea whānau.

In the Kea Room, we often talk about using our "kind hands", and our makeshift zoo has provided the perfect opportunity to explore what this looks like. Using animal figures, children have been learning how to care for others through role play, while kaiako model gentle interactions and kind behaviours between the animals.

These meaningful moments encourage empathy, respect, and caring relationships. Our sensory exploration has also been a big hit! Tamariki have been enjoying getting hands-on with cornflour and sand, investigating different textures, experimenting with movement, and using their senses to discover new things.

The sensory tray, thoughtfully prepared by our outdoor kaiako, has been designed to be inviting while remaining open-ended. This allows children to manipulate the materials in their own way, fostering creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. The zoo experience has provided endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

As tamariki move the animals through the sand and cornflour, they are using their imaginations to create their own adventures while learning alongside their peers through conversation, cooperation, and shared play. We have also been extending our use of te reo Māori throughout our play. Tamariki are learning the names of different animals and are encouraged to engage in conversation during meaningful "serve and return" interactions with kaiako.

These back-and-forth exchanges support language development, strengthen relationships, and help children feel heard and valued. It has been wonderful to see our tamariki embracing kindness, imagination, and curiosity every day.

By following their interests in heroes, families, favourite roles, and animals, we are creating opportunities for rich learning experiences that support their social, emotional, and language development while making learning meaningful and fun.
