A community food stall is something we have been wanting to set up at BestStart Puketaha for some time now. We have a small one inside for whanau at the centre, but during level 3 lockdown this has been inaccessible.

We pulled some strings and have put a call out to one of our talented whanau who are in the process of building us a market style food stand that will sit next to our community library that has been running for several years now.

In the meantime, we wanted to make a start and reach out to our local communities to let them know we were thinking of them during these uncertain times. We began harvesting what fruit, vegetables, and herbs we had at the centre, and collected the eggs from our free-range chickens. Kaiako bought in surplus produce from their own gardens at home, and we began putting together our community stall.

The children helped us put fruit from bags into crates and gather our flowers and herbs for tying. We then popped notices out on our local community Facebook pages, encouraging those in need to come out to the centre, and those who have excess produce of their own to come and swap for things they may not have. A take what you need, leave what you don’t kind of deal.
