The children in Rua had a great time learning about what substances freeze and which do not. We went through the cupboards to see what we could use to experiment with. The children chose which ones they would like to experiment with and helped to fill the ice cube trays. We decided on oil, flour, salt, foam soap, water and conditioner. We had a discussion about which substances the children thought might freeze and we recorded it on a chart we could refer back to once they had frozen.

The next day we took the tray out of the freeze to find out the results of our experiment. We learnt the oil, flour and salt did not freeze but the others did. The children had a great time exploring the texture of each of the frozen substances talking about what it felt and smelt like. We did this experiment a few times with different substances.

Through this experience the children are forming their own hypothesis and testing these out. They are learning about what substances freeze and discussing their findings with their peers and teachers.
