This winter, our tamariki have spent time at our science table wondering and discovering what happens next. Tamariki experimented with the sand timer. They observed and counted how long it takes for the sand to fall.

A student teacher also provided the children with some ice where the children had hands on experience at observing and feeling the ice melting. They also learnt about the new words 'solid, liquid and melting' where they saw how the water transformed from liquid to solid ice and then after melting, it became liquid again.

We added some dishwashing liquid to water, dye and sequins in a clear jar. After closing the jar with the lid on tightly, our tamariki took turns shaking the jar to create a swirling motion like a tornado. "A tornado is powerful wind that destroys houses or anything in its way into the air, we explained. Children enjoyed adding the color and sequins in the water. They chose different coloured sequins and couldn't wait to see what happens after shaking it together

These amazing experiments led to great development of literacy and numeracy skills, observation, patience and turn taking, communication and interaction, experimenting and curiosity, questioning and guessing as well as problem solving.
