Lately in the Platinum Seniors we have had a huge interest in bugs and New Zealand creatures.

Recognizing this interest, we decided to extend the children's curiosity by purchasing a worm farm. Before getting the worm farm we had korero about what foods the worms can and can’t eat.

We received the worm farm and the children were involved in assembling this in preparation for the arrival of the worms. Anticipating the arrival of the worms we created food scrap collection buckets for the preschool age children and began collecting scraps from our kai each day.

Finally the worms arrived and the tamariki observed as Nicola carefully placed all of the worms into the worm farm. The tamariki are very interested in the worms, whanau so far have begun collecting coffee grinds and fruit scraps from their home for the worms to eat. Our next step after establishing the worm farm is to maintain this through kaiako, tamariki and whanau involvement.  There has been so many awesome learning opportunities in this project and the tamariki are looking forward to following the process through to bottling worm wee for our gardens.
