World Peace Day at BestStart Montessori Rongotai

Tuesday, the 21st of September was World Peace Day.

We celebrated this special occasion at mat time where we had an open discussion on what "peace" is, and what it looks like. As you know peace is the core of Montessori.

I started by bringing out the globe and showing the children that everyone all over the world, had a minute’s silence at 12pm as part of World Peace Day - one whole minute to be peaceful and mindful.

I asked the children what they thought peace meant?

They told me one by one, that peace is being happy, being nice, meditating, playing with friends, being quiet, being really calm, not crying, being gentle, it means love, it's kindness all around the world and it means the whole world is quiet.
I was so moved by the beautiful words shared and what their definition of peace was.

I prepared a lovely tray with 3 tea light candles - I shared that each tea light candle represented - peace, love and joy.

We then sang our peace song - "light a candle for peace" :)

I read our book called "Ssshhh", which is about a shrew who has the answers for world peace.

Afterwards, I set a timer for one minute and we sat with our eyes closed and let our minds be clear - when the timer went off, the children insisted we sat for one more minute, so we did.

We left for kai feeling very relaxed :)

What a wonderful day to celebrate.
