At BestStart Prestons, we believe that sensory play is a vital part of learning in the preschool years, as it allows children to explore and make sense of their world through hands-on, meaningful experiences using all their senses.
Sensory play includes activities such as exploring textures in playdough, engaging in water and sand play, listening to sounds, and experimenting with colours, all of which encourage curiosity and deep engagement.
We value these experiences because they support brain development by strengthening neural pathways, helping children build the foundations for thinking, problem-solving, and memory. Through sensory play, children also develop their language skills as they use descriptive words and engage in rich conversations with kaiako and peers.
We believe that sensory experiences foster creativity and imagination, as open-ended resources allow children to express their ideas freely and explore without limitations. These shared experiences also support social development, as children learn to communicate, collaborate, and build relationships with others. Sensory play is important for emotional wellbeing too, as repetitive and hands-on activities can be calming and help children regulate their emotions. In addition, these activities strengthen both fine and gross motor skills, supporting coordination and independence in everyday tasks.
At BestStart Prestons, we intentionally create environments that are rich in sensory opportunities, where children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and follow their interests. Our approach reflects our commitment to seeing children as capable learners and aligns with Te Whāriki, as we support each child’s individual learning journey. We also recognise the importance of natural sensory experiences, such as engaging with mud, water, and outdoor environments, as these provide authentic and meaningful learning opportunities.
Sensory play is at the heart of what we do, as we believe it nurtures confident, curious, and capable learners.
