Mā te whiritahi, ka whakatukukī ai ngā pūmanawa ā tangata

Together weaving the realisation of potential

When you visit BestStart Cornwall Street, you will see kaiako (teachers) and tamariki (children) engaged in learning moments that flow from natural interests and a desire to play.  Kaiako create a physical environment with small, cosy quiet spaces for working in small groups.

We follow a philosophy of both place and play-based education. We embrace the values and all that is embedded with Te Tiriti o Waitangi within our teaching and learning programme. We view learning and development from a holistic perspective, acknowledging tamariki cognitive, emotional, spiritual, physical, and cultural well-being, which is essential for a positive and constructive learning environment.

We place importance on, and highlight, the value play and place-based education serves to strengthen tamariki connections to others and to the region they live. Tamariki becoming sustainably aware, fostering dispositions toward learning such as resilience, persistence, and curiosity and fostering increasing connections and relationships with people, places, and things.

The community has a lot to offer that we value being a part of. “Whakapapa, Māori genealogy, links us with the whenua, our land, moana, our sea, and cultural concepts when working with family and whānau” (J Ritchie - ‎2010).

Our learning spaces

Our centre has three rooms designed for the developmental stages of children as they grow. Our large porch and outdoor area provide space for your child to move and actively explore no matter the weather.  We have a fantastic outdoor playground that provides a variety of opportunities for your child to climb, jump, bike and have fun with their friends including water play!

Delicious meals - Our onsite cook prepares nutritious homemade meals for all tamariki everyday, including any specific dietary requirements and meeting Healthy Heart guidelines. Tamariki enjoy social meal times full of discussion at breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

Community hub - We are located in the heart of Lower Hutt City with access to local parks, art galleries, the local library and Queensgate Shopping Centre only a short walk away.  Our local community is an extension of our playground, providing awesome opportunities for your tamariki to learn about their wider world on our centre excursions.

We would love to meet you to learn how we can best support you and your tamariki.  Pop into the centre anytime to meet us or give us a call or email to arrange a time.

kind words from our parents

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for looking after our son for the last 2 years. Thank you for the welcoming smile each morning, it brightens up our day. Thank you for being patient with our son, teaching him the ABC’s, numbers, how to tidy up and make friends, for the lovely songs you taught him and for encouraging him each day. We are so proud of his achievements and to see him grow into a confident smart boy that without your support and guidance wouldn’t have been possible. So once again A BIG THANK YOU.

It was a wonderful journey Helan had at Early Years Cornwall St. We need to extend our special gratitude to all the teachers who looked after him, cared carried and cradled him. We wish all the very best for the centre, for all the teachers and wish a bright future for all the kids at Early Years Cornwall St centre.”

Parent

We have found Cornwall Street facility great for our family and feel confident that when our son leaves to start school he will definitely be ready and able to fully participate.

Parent

Thank you for always ensuring a happy, contented place for my son to learn and grow.

You have looked after Charlotte since she learnt to walk and now she is ready for school. You taught Jonny the national anthem and the haka! You have celebrated every milestone and achievement of their little lives so far. You have been a big part of our families daily life; we honestly can’t thank you enough! You all help to make this centre a wonderful place for every child.

Parent

A big thank you to all the teachers who have been involved with Charlotte over the last 18 months! We think you have done an outstanding job. Charlotte always has nice things to say about you and is looking forward to preschool. Thanks for all your hard work!

My decision to leave my children when they were so young has been filled with guilt but knowing they have been in such a caring, friendly, safe, stimulating and exiting environment made my decision much easier. I have loved hearing about all their adventures and then reading the teachers version on StoryPark or when I picked them up at the end of the day.

Parent

We are incredibly grateful for the skills and expertise of the staff; they are caring, humorous and really enjoy what they do.

Parent

The team encouraged and supported my breastfeeding journey by providing a quiet and comfortable space to feed my daughter during the day. They are very adaptable around my changing feeding schedule and have made my transition into being a working mum that much easier. Thank you!

I just wanted to give some feedback about the preschool room since Joeline has become Head Teacher. Far too often we are quick to give bad feedback but not good. Since Joline became Head Teacher I have been so impressed with the changes that have been made. I have enjoyed the increased Storypark communication. There has been a significant increase of stories coming through and it is great to see what the kids are getting up to every day. Joline has made such great changes to the room from the art area, carpentry space, decorations, down to the new clocks in the room which incorporate Te Reo Māori and sign language, clearly acknowledging New Zealand's other official languages. It is also evidenced in the Storypark emails that the children are getting up to new and different activities (either that or we just see more now that we are getting more communications). The preschool room has a new, positive vibe among the staff and children, they all seem so settled and things seem to run very smoothly. So, this feedback also extends to all of the other staff in the preschool room who are always so positively engaged with the children and providing them with a fun, safe space. A huge thank you from the Hanson-Goodwin family :)
