BestStart Montessori The Children's House
BestStart Montessori The Children’s House is a warm and welcoming Montessori Preschool in Henderson, West Auckland catering for children aged 2 to 6 years of age and offering both sessional and full day care and education.
The Montessori philosophy offers student centred lessons and activities where children are hands-on and active participants. Our Montessori teachers act as guides and consultants to students on a one-on-one basis and each child is assisted along his or her own learning path. Our well-resourced environment is supportive of this approach.
In the preschool we offer a beautiful spacious playground with many natural elements and lovely established trees.
We have two classrooms so that our programme can be tailored to meet the individual needs of children. Ruma Iti is our introductory classroom for 2 year olds and Ruma Nui classroom is for older children transitioning to continue with the 3-6 year old curriculum.
Our families benefit from excellent child to teacher ratios and a stable and passionate teaching team who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge. We offer 20 ECE hours and fees for additional hours are affordable and competitive.

Besides being presented in a structured way, language is always present in a Montessori classroom. Children are encouraged to ask questions, have discussions, make discoveries and have a sense of curiosity in the world around them. There is always the busy hum of activity in a Montessori classroom because the use of the materials involves many motions – walking, carrying, pouring, speaking and particularly, the constant using of the hands. Dr Montessori never equated silence with goodness and immobility.
A young child meets the world around them through the constant use of all their senses. The sensorial materials in a Montessori classroom help children define qualities such as colour, weight, shape, texture, size, sound, smell etc. Each of the sensorial materials isolates one defining quality, be eliminating or minimising other differences. When a child becomes interested in a particular activity, their behaviour almost always matures. Self-discipline is gradually acquired, through absorption in meaningful work.
The mixed age group of 3 to 6 year olds provides the younger children with a graded series of models for imitation, and the older ones an opportunity to reinforce their own knowledge by helping the younger ones. For the young child, there is something special about tasks that an adult considers ‘ordinary’ – cutting fruit, rolling the dough and making scones etc. They excite the child because they allow them to imitate the adults. Imitation is one of the child’s strongest urges during his early years.A child can learn basic concepts of maths in a very exciting way in the Montessori classroom. They learn by using concrete materials during the years when they enjoy manipulating equipment.

We recently browsed his portfolio together and while doing so, Sebatian has been reminiscing about each photo and also sharing with us what he did and learned in the particular photo. We took time on the planet page and he sang the planet song many, many times with different sounds and finishing it off with "Pluto you are not invited" which cracked us up. He remembered how much he loves puzzles and so after browsing the portfolio he took a puzzle and played with it. It made me a bit emotional looking at his photos of how little he was when he started to learn to go toilet by himself, recognising colours and soon he will be going to primary school. I am forever grateful to all of you.
