At BestStart Papatoetoe, we create a warm, home-like learning environment where children’s holistic development and love for learning are nurtured and supported through collaborative partnerships with parents, whānau, and the community, enabling them to reach their learning potential.
Our local curriculum is guided by the principles of Te Whāriki, New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, and emphasises the development of confident, capable learners through:
Relationships / Ngā Hononga – Children gain a sense of belonging and trust by forming attachments and enhancing their social understanding of the wider world through group activities, peer mentoring, and collaborative play. These experiences support social skills development, empathy, and a sense of community.
Empowerment / Whakamana – Parents, whānau (extended family), and kaiako (teachers) are recognised as unique individuals. We include them through parent-teacher conferences, personalised learning plans, and leadership opportunities for children, fostering self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of agency.
Holistic Development / Kotahitanga – We create rich environments with nurturing, reciprocal, and responsive interactions through sensory play, outdoor exploration, and creative arts. These experiences support children’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development.
Family and Community / Whānau Tangata – Children learn and grow when their culture, knowledge, and community are affirmed. We strengthen these connections through community visits and cultural celebrations, which enhance family bonds, cultural identity, and community awareness.
Treaty of Waitangi – Māori language and customs are incorporated into daily routines, with celebrations such as Waitangi Day and involvement of local iwi (tribes). This promotes cultural respect, understanding, and partnership.
Our curriculum also focuses on preparing children for their next educational journey, providing pathways to kura (school) and ensuring a smooth transition to primary school.
