Discover our unique rooms

BestStart Rongotai is a mixed aged centre, caring for children from 3 months to 5 years of age in one encouraging environment. With pockets of play perfect for both individual and group learning, tamariki have areas of busy and loud fun and calm thoughtful spaces. The mixed age model has many benefits for teachers, children and their whanau.

Tuakana TeinaOur mixed age classroom

Our classroom is thoughtfully designed with a variety of spaces for children to explore different areas of the curriculum. The dining area is a versatile space where we set up learning activities, table-top games, and a dedicated art and collage table. Here, we also share kai together, fostering communication, healthy eating habits, and a strong sense of whanaungatanga (community).

In the living/play room, children can engage with a wide range of resources and immerse themselves in imaginative play, especially in our family play area. Our den is a space for creativity with blocks and musical instruments, which then transforms into a rūma moe (sleep room) after lunch, offering a quiet place for rest. Our library and sensory room serves as a peaceful retreat where children can enjoy books and unwind in a calm atmosphere.

Outside, we have a beautifully safe play area, rebuilt at the end of 2020, featuring a covered sandpit and carpentry space that children can enjoy in all weather. Musical chimes, a water feature, and a small vegetable garden enhance outdoor exploration, while interchangeable play equipment on full safety matting offers endless possibilities for active play. On the other side of the building, we maintain a larger vegetable garden, where children help to tend and care for the plants—harvesting vegetables that are then used in our menu, connecting them to the full cycle of growth and nourishment.
