How do you support my baby’s development during their first year?
A baby's first year is a period of rapid growth and development. During this time, babies build important foundations for communication, movement, relationships, learning and wellbeing through everyday interactions and experiences.
Development during the first year happens through responsive relationships, exploration and play. As babies grow, they begin to communicate, develop physical skills, build confidence and make sense of the world around them. Everyday experiences such as talking, singing, reading, cuddling and playing all support healthy development.
At BestStart, our teachers provide responsive, individualised care that reflects each baby's stage of development, interests and routines. Through caring relationships, play-based experiences and close partnerships with families, we support babies' physical, social, emotional and cognitive development throughout this important stage of life.
Good to know
- During the first year, babies often develop new skills in bursts, so periods of rapid progress may be followed by times when they are practising and consolidating what they have learned.
- Every baby develops at their own pace, and differences in how and when milestones are reached are a normal part of development.
- Sharing updates about new skills, interests or changes you notice at home helps teachers build on your baby's learning experiences at the centre.
